Yes that means the OS will put all of your drives to sleep when it can but that's the only way I've found to fix the problem. I'd love to be able to get spotlight to work. The issue would appear to be my Mac having difficulty reading the Imation CDs. Seemed like the drive was read only.
- That drive is completely done — won't even mount.

- I think mount failure notification is somewhat related to this behavior.
- I can't copy / move / write any files to my external hard drives.
- I use to copy CD tracks that the Finder refused to access with the bash, no problem.

Never forget the command prompt. I have a MacBook (now) dualbooting between Tiger and Ubuntu Gutsy, and never had any problems transferring files (sometimes large movie files) to my external HD. there is the fat32 formatting bt i dont wanna use formatting because i already have a lot of content on the exteral hard disk. So I opened a terminal and cd'ed to the external drive directory.
