the folder I am trying to upload is just over 600 gigs... (and I have over 800 gigs free on my mac pro - I am not sure why that matters, That was very frustrating. why am I getting this error? I have two powerbooks attached via target disk mode and and I can't copy files between them because of this problem. If not, try running a Time Machine backup manually to kick it into gear. I couldn't copy anything to my laptop and in the finder window it didn't show how much free space I had left.
